Earning Through Craft Fairs in a Financial Crisis

By Geoffrey Higgins

My life took a sharp turn lately. With the debilitating financial crisis well underway, I have found myself without a job. Fortunately, I have several things going for me: I have a car that I completely own, a house that I've inherited, and I have a part-time business that I share with my girlfriend.

My girlfriend and I have been setting up booths at craft fairs for a while now, maybe a couple of years. We sold my girlfriend's handmade jewelry there. When we started, it was only a partial income we invested together, but now, we've decided to use it for the time being as an everyday thing. Until the financial crisis is over, we are currently content with what we already have.

All in all, the cheapness of the materials used to make her handcrafted jewelry means that people will continue to buy from us despite the thrifty attitude most of us are adopting. That we sell near the beaches of Florida is also a plus; the whole place has a laid-back atmosphere that helps relax the fear of spending that the world has at the moment.

Until the time comes when I go back to working inside an office again, I am content with selling the crafts my girlfriend makes. Through this, we get to bond on an everyday basis, making our relationship stronger. We work rather efficiently; she handles logistics and craft making, while I see to it that we have good relations with the other booths, as well as arrange everything with the event organizers.

The challenges life throws at us do not hinder me; instead, it inspires me to keep moving forward. Whilst my other officemates who were laid off as well just bum around and relax, I've gotten back on my feet, doing what I can.
