Due to the influx of unemployed, the job boards have become cluttered with people looking to find their next high paying career.
One can often feel like they are sorting through more scams than they are legitimate jobs and the ones they do find have too many applicants for them to stand apart. I feel we have forgotten however the one thing that can truly set us apart from the competition, a referral.
So how do we do this? Simple, by taking a moment to jot down a list of anyone who we can attempt to leverage. Anyone is fair game, as long as they will take at least a call from you.
Once you have the list, get together all the contact information and formulate a plan. Depending on your relationship with each person, you might want to approach them differently, but still approach them.
No text messages or emails in this part. You are going to be asking these people for a favor, so you will want to place a call or meet each one of these people in person.
Things to remember when approaching the contact. Be professional and courteous of the contact's time. Let them know that you are currently looking for a new career and that you were one of the first people you thought of for whatever reason you want to insert here...etc...etc.
Be clear on what it is you are asking them to do and then set a follow up time to talk about the results whether it be an interview or just an inquiry into open positions.
I have found this to be the best way to get good career leads quickly. WHo doesn't want to have a referral from someone they trust working for them?
Remember that life is just a series of relationships, so we may as well leverage as many as we can!! Good Luck
