Successfully Running Your Own Business

By Craig Calvin

Statistics show that the vast majority of new businesses fail within the first few years. That fact doesn't seem to discourage those with the entrepreneurial spirit, however, as new business are opening every day. And many of them are able to keep their doors open, some even are making a profit. With the challenges placed on us by the economy, finding and keeping a job is more and more difficult. So those who are so inclined are taking matters into their own hands and opening their own businesses.

It is not unusual to become discouraged when starting up a business. Things often don't run the way you had planned, and when things seem grim, negativity can take over. It is important to stay focused and to never give up. Do whatever you need to do to keep going. Hang motivational posters. Surprisingly, they actually do work, and cost next to nothing. Marketing your business will be a key to success, and should not be overlooked for its importance. You may consider taking out ads in small local papers or sponsoring youth sports teams. Network wherever you go, and never leave home without business cards in your pocket. Some tv stations have very low rates for late night advertising time and that can be a good value. People who are up in the middle of the night watching tv are known to pay more attention to the ads.

Internet advertising is also a great way to advertise. Consider posting some ads at a few of the popular classified websites, as they are usually free. Message boards and discussion forums also will help build name recognition. Having your own website is almost a requirement theses days. There are many inexpensive or free ways to market your site, and it can be a great way to sell your product or service.

No matter how well your business does, keeping clear financial records should be the most important thing you do. You will need to maintain information for reporting purposes to a variety of agencies. If you do not have the skills or time to keep your books, then possibly a family member or friend can give you some guidance.

It takes an inherent desire and sometimes a little bit of craziness to open a business, especially in today's world. But with determination and an open mind, success can be achieved. No matter what type of business you open, staying true to your goals will help you be the success you've dreamed of.
